Last week, we got to talk about the “Celebrating Community for the Holidays.” If you haven’t had a chance to read it… we really encourage you to go and read all about it! However, this week, we get to talk about the “Gift of Giving Back.” Here at Corrective Chiropractic, we want to be extra intentional about giving back this holiday season. Whether that be doing a canned food drive, sponsoring a family in need, donating to a local charity, or serving our local community… our aim is to help keep hope and joy alive!

Filling the Gap

Our why behind being extra intentional about giving back this year is because we want to fill the gap. Single parents need it. Families need it. Small businesses need it. Our community needs it! So, no matter what Corrective Chiropractic office you call “home,” be sure to see what we are doing to give back. Since we are all located in different areas, we have each chosen different ways to fill the gap where we are at.

What We are Doing for Giving Back

Our Sandy Springs office is helping prevent hunger locally with CAC. The Woodstock office is doing a canned food drive for a local elementary school and doing the giving tree. Our Decatur office is gathering donations for Friends of Refugees Christmas store and partnering with DFACS to do an Angel Tree. Our Buckhead office is holding a blanket drive and making goody bags for the homeless in Atlanta.

Do What You Can

We can all agree that this year has been challenging. Most likely, we have all struggled financially in some shape or fashion. So as we give back… we ask you to do what you can, with what you are able, as it makes sense to you and your family. If you are in the position to give abundantly more this year… do it! If you are only able to donate one can… do it! No matter what you decide to give or donate, we are so thankful for your generosity and kindness. We truly are better together. There’s no denying that we are blessed to call you our patients!

Thanksgiving Traditions

We don’t know what your Thanksgiving traditions are, but we want to share one of our favorites with you! Whether gathering in person or virtual this year – go around the table (or Zoom call) with your friends or family to share three things that you are thankful for this year. Not only does this help us see the good, but it also allows us to be grateful for the gifts we have so graciously been given. This is such a fun tradition to do… especially with your children! Their answers always guarantee some good giggles and remind us, as adults, to keep the child-like joy of our children.

Reach Out

We encourage you to take this day to reach out to the people who either have or has had an impact in your life. This day is more than grandma’s famous stuffing or pecan pie. Instead, we hope that Thanksgiving is a day that we cherish the ones who have helped shape, steady, and strengthen us. We are who we are because of those closest to us and our circle of influence.

Made to Heal and Thrive

Your body is always FOR YOU and never against you! It was made to heal and thrive. Think about it! When we get a papercut on our finger, our body closes the wound in order to avoid getting an infection. Then… our body defends, cleans, repairs, and heals itself. Similarly, when there are changing conditions happening within our body, we yawn. While it is widely believed that yawning is a response of tiredness or boredom, further research shows that yawning is a way to help our mind and body transition from one behavioral state to another – sleep to wakefulness, wakefulness to sleep, anxiety to calm, boredom to alertness.

Learn to Listen to Your Body

Let’s take our last thought a little further. When we get a headache, our body is trying to tell us something. More often than not, we are probably dehydrated and just need some water. But here’s what we know to be true – we don’t tell our bodies to heal our wounds. We don’t decide to yawn. We don’t even learn how to get a headache. Our bodies are just innately smart… you tracking with me? Our bodies give us signs. All we have to do? Learn how to slow down and listen.

Regular Chiropractic Care

When our patients are under regular chiropractic care – their bodies begin to THRIVE. Through specific chiropractic adjustments, our job as your Chiropractor focuses on removing interferences to your nervous system. On average, our patients spend about 10-15 minutes in our office. For the majority of our patients, those 10-15 minutes is usually the only time they set aside for themselves. Through the busyness of juggling work… with kids… with side hustles – it’s safe to say that life can get a little crazy sometimes. I’m sure we missed a million things in the middle, too. In today’s blog, we are going to keep it short and simple. You ready? You (yes, you!) are allowed to pace yourself. In fact, we encourage you too. Here at Corrective Chiropractic, we will always remind you that good things take time. We are not after quick fixes or fast races to the finish. We are in this thing for the long haul, friends! No shortcuts or sitting sidelines or sugar coating around here.

100-Mile Race – Pace Yourself

For those of you may not know… our Founder (Dr. Austin Cohen – Buckhead Doctor) just completed a 100-mile race on Saturday. You heard us right… 100 miles! You might be thinking, “Only crazy people would run 100 miles.” And you are probably right! There are only a handful of people who would CHOOSE to run 100 miles for the fun of it. With that being said, only a handful of people will get to experience the crazy character-building, mental-strengthening, and endurance-sharpening that comes from completing a 100-mile race.

Everyone thinks they can run 100 miles until they are tested by freezing cold temperatures, crazy elevation, lactic acid build-up, and the extreme fatigue of running for 30 hours – without stopping. Yet, it is only those who are willing to train relentlessly, fuel their bodies with nutritious foods consistently, and commit to proper recovery regularly… that will be fully prepared to run 100 miles.

It’s often said that when you toe the start line of running a marathon, every mile you have ever run EVER has led up to that exact moment. When you are running a race of such complexity, your training goes back way further than just your typical 16-week training plan. Most of you probably saw Dr. Austin’s weekly Strava training highlights or sweet Instagram finish line pictures. However, most of us did not see the dedication to early morning training for 26 weeks, behind-the-scenes work to rest and recover, or sacrifice with friends and family.

Glory in the Grind

We tell you that story in hopes that it would encourage you to do hard things! Whether that’s in your life, faith, or health journey – we challenge you to do the ONE thing that scares you the most. For you, that might look like creating an exercise routine for the first time in your whole life. It might look like going 30 days without purchasing / shopping. It might even look like going to your local Chiropractor to find the root cause of your health issues. Whatever it is and wherever you are in your hard thing… remember to pace yourself.

Here at Corrective Chiropractic, we are all about going the extra mile when it comes to your health and well-being! (You can expect to be here for about 45 minutes to an hour for your first visit.)

What to Expect on Your Second Visit – Report of Findings

After your first visit, you will come back for your Report of Findings. At this second visit… the Doctor will go over your X-Rays, recommendations of care, as well as any finances moving forward. Why Quick-Fixes Aren’t the Answer

The truth is… the society that we live in today is all about “quick-fixes.” You know what we are talking about, right? Microwaves, meal replacement shakes, fast food, Netflix, one-hour photos – you name it, you’ve probably got it (or at least have access to it)! But it doesn’t just stop there. This “quick-fix” society also spills over into the way we approach our health. We want to feel better and NOW! So we take pills for things like headaches, indigestion, trouble sleeping, poor skin, and anxiety.

Quick Fixes – I Want It Now

While medicine most certainly has its place in our world, it shouldn’t always be our first grab-n-go. Sure… this “I want it now!” society might seem like a more easy and efficient way of life. However, our desire for instant gratification or immediate relief can actually put us under more stress in the long run. Furthermore, this compulsion makes us feel an even greater need to condense our schedules by utilizing any shortcuts available to us.

Mindset Shift

But what if we began to shift our mindset? What if we learned to not expect immediate results? Nothing worth having or accomplishing will come easy or overnight. Let’s face it – living healthier and more authentic lives takes long practices. Some days, it will be hard to do the things that take time. But that’s when we speak truth over ourselves: “Our health is an investment and not an expense.” That’s when we remember that success is a consequence, not a goal. If we shoot for purely success, we start wrong. That’s when we look in front of the mirror and say our positive affirmations.

Healing Takes Time

Now, when it comes to healing – things take time! We get it – that’s hard to hear sometimes. When we are in pain – all we want is a miracle or an overnight remedy. But, friends! If you’re reading this and planning on going on vacation anytime soon – listen up, friends! As your trusted Corrective Chiropractic Chiropractor, we are here to educate you on how to stay healthy on vacation. Here are three of our favorite tips and tricks!

Key to Staying Healthy Is Morning Movement!

The big question is, “How do we keep our healthy habits, no matter the location?” Our first tip of advice is to START your morning with movement. For some of you, it might look like doing a 30 minutes of HIIT. It could look like a fun bike ride around the beach or even a relaxed walk to brunch with the whole family. For some of you, it might look like booking a class at a cool studio you’ve never been to before. For others of you, it might look like a quick jog around the new city! Whatever you choose… the trick is to put it on your schedule. The truth is, if it’s not in the books, it most-likely won’t happen. Moving your body has so much power to change your mind! Wake up early, get it done, & then enjoy all your fun adventures ahead. Plus, you very rarely feel disappointed after a workout. Remember that.

Stay Hydrated!

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! We cannot chant this enough. Hydrating is so key to staying healthy on vacation. Our bodies need water to be able to function at its most optimal level. Not only that, but water helps deliver nutrients to our cells. That’s huge, people! Our trusted tip of the day? Keep a reusable and insulated water bottle with you wherever you go. We recommend drinking at least half your body-weight in ounces per day. Sweating or working out? Grab some electrolyte tabs to help you replenish what you lose!

Rest and Recover!

Whether we often realize it or not, a big reason why we need a vacation is because we need sleep. Sure, we all want a nice getaway! But what we really NEED is rest. Most likely, you are 1 of 8 in 10 Americans who say that they are stressed (according to the 2017 Gallup poll). While some stress can be good, our bodies aren’t meant to withstand constant and on-going stress. We want to avoid triggering our sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for our “fight-or-flight” mode. When we are chronically in that “fight-or-flight” mode, our body’s stress response system is disrupted. As a result, our body reacts by raising our overall cortisol levels and disturbing our normal cortisol and melatonin rhythms. Instead, our goal is to activate our parasympathetic nervous system, which facilitates our “rest and digest” function. If you find yourself stressed, perhaps you are not spending enough time in the “rest and digest” mode. Here’s a sweet trick! Put your phone / work away and use this vacay time to rest and recharge. Think about this… our ancestors did not have much vacation time. However, they were able to maintain good health because they knew how to rest and recharge – best.

There you go! Three tips & tricks to stay healthy while on vacation! While they might seem obvious… you would be surprised how quick we are to forget the simple things. Now, go have fun and enjoy your well-deserved trip!
