Chiropractic Adjustments

Chiropractic Adjustments

What if we told you that headaches, backaches, or joint pain are common, but nowhere near normal. Would you think twice? Here at Corrective Chiropractic, people’s norms are changing for the better and for the long haul because of chiropractic adjustments! So let’s take a look at how chiropractic care works.

How Does Chiropractic Work?

As Chiropractors, our entire profession is built upon the basic principle that the body has the incredible, natural ability to heal itself (under the right conditions). Our job is to help create an environment that helps this inner-healing process. Through specific chiropractic adjustments, you allow your body to be put in the best position to heal itself! Why would you want to get chiropractic adjustments?

Why Get Chiropractic Adjustments?

The purpose of chiropractic care is not the treatment of conditions or disease.  It is the restoration of normal body function. We reduce stress-related interference to the nervous system enhancing overall body function. All the systems of the body depend on the optimal function of the nervous system. This includes the circulatory, digestive, hormonal, glandular, immunological, muscular, reproductive, respiratory, and skeletal systems. Let’s look at some benefits of chiropractic care.

What are the Benefits of Chiropractic?

It’s hard to find any other profession on the planet that can prevent neuromuscular-based diseases like chiropractic can. That is why I’ve been personally getting adjusted for over 11 years now. I recommend my patients, friends, and family members to do the same. But don’t just take my word for it! Below you’ll find evidence from medical research studies, systematic reviews, and even case studies supporting 5 of the top benefits of chiropractic adjustments!

1. Low Back and Neck Pain:

In a study* conducted to test the effectiveness of different approaches for treating neck pain 272 participants were divided into three groups. Group 1 received spinal manipulative therapy from a doctor of chiropractic (DC).  Pain medications (over-the-counter pain relievers, narcotics and muscle relaxants) were received by group 2. The last group only followed at-home exercise recommendations. After 12 weeks, about 57% of those who met with DCs, and about 48% of those who exercised, reported at least a 75% reduction in pain. Of the group of people who took pain medication only 33% reported decreased pain. After one year, approximately 53%  of the two drug-free groups (chiropractic and exercise) continued to report at least a 75% reduction in pain. Only 38% of those who only took medication experienced a reduction in pain.

2. Headaches (Tension and Migraine)

A group trial found that 22% of people who had chiropractic treatment saw the number of headache attacks drop by 90%. In that same study, 49% said they had a significant reduction in pain intensity. Few interventions can initiate headache relief naturally, without the risks of taking drugs long-term, like chiropractic adjustments can.

3. Blood Pressure

In 2007, George Bakris* , published a study with a team of researchers in the Human Journal of Hypertension. This study showed that one chiropractic adjustment had the same effect as two blood pressure-lowering drugs. The effects of just one chiropractic adjustment lasted more than six months! Compared to the placebo-treated patients, those who got the real procedure saw an average 14 mm Hg greater drop in systolic blood pressure (the top number in a blood pressure count) and an average 8 mm Hg greater drop in diastolic blood pressure (the bottom blood pressure number).

4. Athletic Performance

There is good reason why professional athletes, including Michael Phelps, Jerry Rice and Joe Montana, have made a point to regularly be treated by chiropractors.  Over 50% of NFL teams have a chiropractor on staff. One of the most overlooked aspects of chiropractic care is that it enhances functionality in everyday life,  including athletic performance. Studies have shown that when it comes to supporting recovery and improving physical performance, chiropractic adjustments are helpful because they:

  • Reduce inflammatory cytokines
  • Boost the immune system
  • Enhance pulmonary function
  • Decrease mental and oxidative stress
  • Relieve muscle tension
  • And can naturally increase energy levels

Ultimately, our goal is to help reduce inflammation, enhance joint function and reduce pain. Adjustments will also help improve range of motion, minimize recovery time, and maximize athletic performance.

5. Colic, Acid Reflux, & Ear Infections in Children

Why are chiropractic adjustments helpful in these situations? The reasons for this vary, but there is one common theme. Nerves located in the gut and brain are quite sensitive to neurological insult caused by vertebral subluxations. By realigning the spine and reducing pressure placed on certain nerves, the gut-brain connection is improved. This works the same way in both children and adults. A healthier, “happier” gut at any age can help increase immune function. A healthy gut will also reduce inflammation and reduce pain in various parts of the body.

There you have it! The benefits mentioned above might draw the most patients to visit chiropractors. There are also many more reasons why chiropractic care is such a valuable treatment approach. Additional benefits of chiropractic adjustments include helping to treat:

  • Vertigo & dizziness
  • Bowel regularity
  • Improved mental clarity
  • ADHD
  • Neck pain
  • Arthritis and joint pain
  • Scoliosis
  • Asthma
  • Blood pressure
  • Healthy pregnancy
  • Organ function
  • Surgery prevention

Chiropractic Lifestyle

Chiropractic Lifestyle

A Chiropractic lifestyle is sometimes unheard of in our society, right? However, it is truly a healthy lifestyle! Sure, it is an alternative approach to the traditional drugs and surgeries. But really, it is about making conscious decisions towards healthy living and all-around wellness + wholeness!

What is a Chiropractic Lifestyle?

Most of the time, when people think of Chiropractic, they think of neck or back pain. But a Chiropractic lifestyle is so much more than that! Yes, it includes regular adjustments. However, it also includes a healthy diet, exercise, and other positive lifestyle choices.

Why Should I Choose This Lifestyle?

Although a lot of patients will come into our office with specific issues, Chiropractic care is also used as the preservation of health. Because your nervous system controls every cell, organ, and tissue in your body, Chiropractors focus their attention on the health of the spine being properly aligned.

When subluxations occur, these misalignments put pressure and tension on the nerves exiting from the spine, causing either pain or decrease of function somewhere in your body. This means that the brain and body cannot communicate effectively, which leads to symptoms and dysfunction.

How Does This Fit In With My Lifestyle?

In this day and age, we are always on the go! We are always in the left-lane, going somewhere fast and want things to happen NOW! We choose to pick immediate pleasure over delayed gratification. Unfortunately, we tend to do that in most areas of our life, including our health. Chiropractic care, however, is not a “quick fix.” Although sometimes it is sold that way, it is not meant to serve as an emergency room. If you only come to see the Chiropractor when you’re in pain, then it is similar to only eating healthy food when you’re sick. Make sense?

Good Things Take Time

It takes your body time to heal and adapt to the changes that are being made. It takes patience and positivity and persistence. The truth is, Chiropractic care is not designed to make you instantly feel better, but FUNCTION better! We will give you some “homework” such as special exercises and routines to continue working on correcting between sessions.

Think about it! If you wake up, make it to a workout, work a 9-5 job Monday through Friday that has you sedentary for the majority of the day, drive home, cook dinner, take care of your family’s needs before your own, then do that process all over again… a substantial amount of physical and emotional stress is being placed on your body all week.

How To Get The Best Results Out Of Your Daily Routine

When Chiropractic care is a normal part of your routine, your body is not able to adapt to those constant stressors in your life! Not to mention, when you are properly aligned, your body is put in the most optimal position to heal from the inside-out. If you don’t have patience, you will conform to what society says is “normal” and go straight to the medicine cabinet to cover up your symptoms.

Your body is always going to go through stresses that will come with different seasons of your life. But it’s all about how you adapt to stress when it comes! When you come to understand that patience is required for healing and restoration of life, you will notice that your body’s innate ability to adapt and heal is pretty incredible! Keep your chiropractic appointments! This is essential in maintaining a healthy spine.

Health Is A  Continued Journey

We write all this to remind you to not give up on your health journey too soon! Sometimes, setbacks happen because of something external that is out of our control. We like to encourage our patients, “That’s why we have you on a care plan.” It is only a matter of time before your body begins healing the way it was designed to, naturally!

We will leave you with this awesome quote by D.D Palmer, “Chiropractic is a restorative healthcare profession that focuses on the inherent healing capacity of the body and the fact that the nervous system is the primary system involved in that healing and repair.”

Should You Eat or Drink After A Chiropractor Adjusts You?

A chiropractic adjustment is a therapy used by chiropractors to adjust a patient’s spine. Patients who receive adjustment therapy generally do so to treat either acute or chronic pain in the neck, head or back. Many patients see a significant improvement in their condition after adjustment therapy.

What Happens During an Adjustment?
Spinal adjustment therapy is usually performed on a patient as he or she lies down on a table. The practitioner uses his or her hands to apply pressure to the patient’s back or neck. The patient will feel popping or cracking in the back or neck, though adjustment therapy is generally painless.

Food and Drink
After your adjustments, you can eat and drink as usual, unless your chiropractor specifically tells you not to. One rule of thumb is that the patient should drink plenty of water after an adjustment. Drinking water will provide nourishment to vertebral discs. This keeps the spine flexible. Aim to drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water daily.

In general, people should sleep on their back or side. Sleeping on your stomach requires you to tilt your head unnaturally for hours at a time. Depending on your medical condition, the chiropractor may recommend that you sleep on one side or the other. If you have certain conditions, the chiropractor may recommend that you sleep on your back.

What to Do After an Adjustment
Your chiropractor in mount pleasant will give you a treatment plan that typically involves returning for multiple adjustments over time. As you move through your treatment plan, your chiropractor will evaluate how well your body responds. He or she may ask about your pain level at each visit. You may need to receive more or less adjustments to find the right balance to improve your condition.

Exercises and Stretches
While you’re receiving adjustments, most chiropractors will also recommend that you exercise or stretch at home. The chiropractor will either teach you specific stretches or else recommend an exercise therapist.

The exercises are intended to strengthen your back and muscles. Exercising can improve balance and coordination after your adjustment. Beware that if you have a serious back or neck problem, certain exercises may not be possible for you. Yoga and Pilates are generally good options for most patients. However, you should consult with your practitioner before you start an exercise routine.

As previously stated, after spinal adjustments you can eat as usual. Drink plenty of water. Do the stretches and exercises given to you by your chiropractor or physical therapist.

Can’t Sleep? Try Going to A Chiropractor

Most people don’t associate sleep with visiting a chiropractor, but there is a real relationship between these two worlds. In fact, chiropractors are often the solution to chronic sleep problems. If you can’t sleep, explore the reasons why a chiropractor in Woodstock might be your best solution.

1. Aligning the Spine
A chiropractor’s main job is to align the spine. They perform this service by adjusting the body and putting it into specific positions. This practice may seem extreme, but an aligned spine contributes to fewer restless nights.

Pain is ultimately the culprit for your lack of sleep. Misaligned spines create pain along any part of the back. You may not even realize that the spine isn’t in good shape until you experience a chiropractor’s services. If you aren’t in pain, sleep just comes naturally.

2. Improving Blood Flow
As the chiropractor aligns your spine, other tissues move into their natural positions. Tight muscles, strained tendons and other areas will suddenly feel loose and relaxed. In fact, these areas are now receiving better blood flow than before.

When you’re misaligned, certain blood vessels can be narrowed. Nutrients flowing within the bloodstream don’t have a chance to nourish your tissues. Better blood flow leads to a healthier body that sleeps well each night.

3. Suggesting Sleep Positions
Chiropractors are experts in anatomy. They understand how each bone, tendon and ligament contribute to a well-aligned body. As a result, they’ll know how your body should be positioned during rest for the best night’s sleep.

Ideally, sleeping on your back is the most natural position. Your chiropractor will usually tell patients that sleeping on the stomach is just a recipe for insomnia. However, the chiropractor will look at your individual situation in order to determine the smartest position. Everyone has unique needs when it comes to comfort.

4. Discussing Pillow and Mattress Selections
The materials that you rest your head and body on are playing a role in your sleep quality. Chiropractors are informal experts in this area because they provide advice about the best beds for their patients. The spine can only remain aligned if the person sleeps on firm pillows and mattresses.

Soft materials allow the spine to bend into unnatural positions after an alignment session. You end up misaligned again, which leads to pain and less sleep. Following your chiropractor’s suggestions about the proper pillows and mattresses will make a difference in your sleep quality.

Always research your chosen chiropractor before heading off to your first appointment. This professional should have the necessary background to align your spine. They can be your partner in quality rest for the rest of your life otherwise.

The Benefits of Going to See A Chiropractor

If you are dealing with some pain, consider visiting a chiropractor. Millions of people visit the chiropractor every year. While most people think that chiropractors only help people who are dealing with back pain, that is not the case. Chiropractors can treat several types of issues.

Scientifically Proven Benefits Of Tea For Your Mind And Body

Tea, coffee’s older, more sage has survived the wave of trendy new drinks that we’ve seen come and gone. And yes, there have been exciting new twists on tea lately on its own is still a popular beverage – the most popular drink in the world, bar water of course.

But aside from being older than coffee, millions of drinkers have a reason why it’s their chosen cup of poison.

It’s two-fold effects benefits both the mind and body to achieve the state of Zen.

EGCG: For the body

Tea, regardless if it’s black, green, yellow, or white is loaded with polyphenol antioxidants that fight against free radicals.

Let’s take matcha green tea for example.

Its main polyphenol is EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) which was found out in a study that its concentration is three times greater than regular green tea. But how does this impact your health? What are free radicals anyway?

If you can still remember high school chemistry, atoms are surrounded by electrons that orbit in layers called shells. The inner shell has a required number of electrons per shell that needs to be met before going into the next layer.

When an atom has incomplete atoms in its outer shell, they go rogue and bond with other atoms (“oxidation”) to complete the needed electrons.

When certain parts of a cell are oxidized, it fails to function normally and when enough functions are impaired, the cell dies. These microscopic events can have serious ramifications to your health, from aging, cancer to Parkinson’s disease.

This is where antioxidants come in. Known as “free radical scavengers” they seek free radicals and neutralize them by donating an electron before it oxides other atoms. Once the shells are filled, it stabilizes and stops being toxic to cells.

The abundance of antioxidants can benefit your health in the following ways:

  • Reduce the risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, and cancer, the whole lot of them: breast, colon, colorectal, skin, lung, esophageal, stomach, pancreatic, ovarian, liver, prostate, head and neck, and oral
  • It may support heart health by alleviating the risk factors of heart disease – reducing blood pressure, cholesterol and the accumulation of plaque in the blood.
  • Promotes weight loss, especially if taken in conjunction with the caffeine in tea.
  • Recent research suggests that EGCG plays a role in improving neurological cell function and preventing degenerative brain disease. There’s also a link found between a higher intake of green tea and the reduced risk of age-related brain degeneration along with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

L-theanine: For the mind

What makes tea amazing is that it does so by doing much for your body, it does amazing things for the mind. The L-theanine amino acid is found in both green and black tea. It’s found in a limited amount of food, mostly tea and mushrooms.

By influencing nerve impulses in the brain, it causes the release of hormones that bring a sense of calm over you. It’s recommended that your drink tea if you want to improve your mental focus but specifically it improves the entirety of your mental health:

  • You’ll sleep better. During the metabolism of l-theanine, it encourages your brain to produce more alpha waves and reduce beta waves, which keeps your head clear so it’s easier for you to relax and fall into sleep.
  • Have you been offered a cup of warm tea to “help you relax”? There’s an actual scientific study conducted on this, the results of which lead the researchers to conclude that it’s not a placebo effect. Rather, l-theanine reduces a person’s resting heart rate to bring about the feeling of relaxation.
  • Increased cognitive performance. L-theanine on its own can improve a person’s attention span and reaction time. Together with caffeine (which tea also possesses), it keeps you focused and alert which can lead to the improvement in number skills.
  • Lose weight. The physical wellness bought by l-theanine is its ability to curb hunger and prolong the feeling of satiation. The result of eating less will lead to weight loss.

10 More Simple, Science-backed ways to reduce Stress (PART 2)

10 More Simple, Science-backed ways to Reduce Stress

Stress comes in many different forms and burdens your life in different ways, the methods to combat it are just as abundant. After 10 Simple, Science-backed Ways to Reduce Stress, we’ve listed out more ways for you to reduce stress. If your stressors are your environment, your work ethic or you’re simply burnt out, there’s a way for you to feel better and get out of the ditch stress has pushed you into.

  1. Consider supplements. Certain supplements can reduce stress and anxiety. There are more exotic options that promise to reduce your anxiety, but you can never go wrong with green tea. It has been scientifically proven that green tea promotes calmness because of L-theanine, an amino acid that stimulates relaxation in you.
  2. Light a scented candle. The atmosphere of a room with a lighted candle is warm and soothing, the added scents can also decrease anxiety and improve the quality of your sleep. Some of the calming scents in aromatherapy include geranium, ylang-ylang, sandalwood, neroli, bergamot, rose, lavender, vetiver, roman chamomile, frankincense & orange or orange blossom.
  3. Stop procrastinating. Slacking off work is a bad habit that leads to a negative reaction e.g., scrambling to stay on top of your piling workload. The thought of putting in more hours than you should just add more to your plate considering playing catch up is stressful enough. Get in the habit of maximizing your productivity so you get more done on time and work doesn’t eat out of your relaxation time. Achieving work-life balance is the key to managing work-related stress.
  4. Enjoy the outdoors. Studies show that being a shut-in increases the chances for depression and that the occasional stroll in the outdoors reduces the risk for it. A 90-minute walk through a natural environment was found to lower the repetitive negative thinking compared to those in a city setting. Aside from the mental benefits, a healthy dose of fresh air and sunlight will do wonders for your body. Even if you’re not an outdoor person but a homebody, the change of environment will do you some good.
  5. Take a vacation. How many unused vacation days did you have last year? Make the most out of your allotted vacations to get away from the stress of work and home and be energized, increase productivity (for when you get back of course), increased happiness and heightened sex drive. Don’t think of vacations as a luxury because they’re crucial to your happiness and health, both physical and mental. If you’re in a relationship, it’ll benefit from a getaway too: 80% of people who vacation at least once a year say that romance is still alive in their relationship.
  6. Sleep right. Don’t overlook sleep in your quest to conquer stress. A night out or an all-night scramble to meet a deadline will leave you groggy and lethargic the next morning. Keep this up and you’ll develop a full-blown anxiety disorder. How to have the right amount of sleep? Time management: get done what you need to do at work, so you don’t bring them home and keep the nights out at a minimum.
  7. Deep breaths. Breathing exercises where you take slow, deep inhales and exhales will calm down your body. It combats the physiological symptoms that stress brings on. There’s also the mental aspect of it: getting control of your breathing makes you feel that you have a grip on things and that makes you feel immediately better.
  8. Set realistic goals. A part of what drives us into stress is the immense pressure we put on ourselves to achieve our goals by the deadlines you set. The failure to accomplish them brings on negative thoughts that cause a domino effect on your mental and physical health. The key is to set achievable goals and striving for excellence, not perfection.
  9. Check your email less frequently. Constantly checking our inboxes is born out of the anxiety crucial e-mails and that being always at the back of your mind is not a good thing. A study found out that people feel less stressed when they check their email less often. Try setting up alerts so you know exactly when your bosses’ email, so you don’t keep checking.
  10. Time management. The habit of planning things through and seeing it get done is that stress management technique that works best according to a study. People who plan things ahead were fighting stress before it even happened, and thus reduced the onset of stress and frustrated. Get the more difficult things out of the way earlier on and save the easy ones for last so, at the end of the day or week, you don’t feel as rushed or stressed. Don’t be a deadliner.
